3 Months Old

3 month weights:
Anthony: 9 lbs 7 oz
Aryanna: 7 lbs 7 oz

What they're up to at 3 months (3 weeks adjusted age):
-Eating, eating, eating!  Anthony is taking 5 oz every 4 hours and Aryanna is taking 4 oz every 4 hours
-Sleeping a 5 hour stretch at night
-Grasping and holding onto their toy rings
-Lifting their heads quite a bit during tummy time
-Tracking with their eyes and focusing on our faces more
-Smiling on purpose!  I got about 5 huge smiles out of Aryanna today and Anthony smiled for Daddy the other day.
-The occupational therapist and I are pretty sure Anthony reached for a toy on purpose on Monday!  She let us borrow the toy which is flowers that light up and play music when he touches them.  It has provided him with lots of entertainment this week.  It still kind of freaks Aryanna out - I think it overstimulates her.

Here are a bunch of pictures of the little munchkins from their 3 month photo shoot:

Anthony is Having Surgery

It turns out Anthony has to have surgery because he does have an inguinal hernia.  Poor baby :(  We went to their 3 month appointment on Monday and the pediatrician told us that the hydrocele had turned into a hernia (a pretty common problem with preemies) so she scheduled us to see the pediatric surgeon today.  It doesn't sound like this is something we want to mess with so he's scheduled for surgery on September 11th.  This surgeon has done 4 or 5 of these surgeries every week for 25 years, so it does comfort us to know that Anthony will have such an experienced surgeon.  Normally this surgery is done on an outpatient basis, but because Anthony has had so many other complications and is still on oxygen they will keep him overnight to make sure he does alright.  He will have to be intubated during the surgery and then he will go back to the oxygen he's on now.  While they're in there fixing the hernia on the right side, they will go ahead and close the left side as well so he doesn't develop a hernia on that side at some point.  Please pray for a smooth surgery and a quick recovery for our sweet boy.

Weight check:  On Monday Aryanna weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and Anthony weighed 9 lbs 7 oz!  They're finally getting some meat on their bones and even have some rolls!  They continue to get closer to the growth curve.  Anthony's head circumference is on the growth curve, which the pediatrician will keep an eye on since his height and weight aren't on the curve yet.  It's probably because of the swelling while he was in the hospital.  Since he's come home his head has grown the 1 cm a week that it's supposed to.  Keep praying that they would continue to grow and gain weight.

Here are a couple of pictures of the little cuties!

Pray for Anthony and Aryanna's Twin Friends

My heart is breaking for our friends as they find themselves in a very similar situation to ours just 3 months ago.  We were thrilled when we found out our friends Joy (who Jose and I have done youth ministry with for years) and BJ were going to be having twins a few months after us.  Little did we know we'd be sharing the preemie experience as well.  They are having identical twin boys and they found out recently that Baby B wasn't growing as much as he should and today they found out that the blood flow in the umbilical cords is not good so they are going in today for a C-section.  She is a little over 30 weeks.  Please pray for a safe and smooth delivery and protection for their precious little boys.  The NICU journey is not an easy one, but we also know that they'll see God move in miraculous ways as he continues to knit together their precious little ones.

***UPDATE:  The twins are here.  Logan weighs 2 pounds 12 ounces and Luke weighs 2 pounds 13 ounces.  They're in the NICU and doing well.  Please continue to pray for these precious miracles that they would grow and get strong day by day.

Medical Update

We've had a few appointments the past couple of weeks, so I'd say it's time for an update!

Pulmonologist (Lung Doctor)
Both Anthony and Aryanna went to the pulmonologist a couple of weeks ago. He said being on oxygen is kind of a fine balance: they still need it to breathe, but all the time they've spent on oxygen causes scarring on their lungs.  So, the sooner they can come off the oxygen, the better.  Gaining weight and growing also helps produce new, unscarred tissue so they're doing great in that department! He left both of them on half a liter of oxygen for now.  We'll go back in 6 weeks and re-evaluate then.  In six weeks he will also order a sleep study where all 4 of us will pack up and spend the night at a sleep clinic.  Everyone breathes differently at night than they do during the day, so as we start weaning them off the oxygen the sleep study will tell us if they may still need oxygen at night even after they've come off of it during the day.  He also stressed what our pediatrician has been telling us: their lungs and immune systems are still extremely fragile.  So that means we can't take them to public places (even church) until probably April or May.  If they catch anything, especially any respiratory illnesses, it could easily land them back in the hospital.

Head Ultrasound
Anthony had his follow-up head ultrasound last week and the hydrocephalus (swelling) is stable.  His fontanelle (soft spot) still feels good and he hasn't needed any spinal taps since a couple of weeks before he left the hospital.  When we see our pediatrician on Monday for their 3 month appointment we'll see when she wants another head ultrasound done.

OT/PT/Developmental Follow-Up Clinic
This week we went back to Mercy for the NICU Developmental Follow-Up Clinic and they're doing great!  With Anthony's brain bleed, we've of course been concerned about his development but the nurse practitioner said if she hadn't read his file she wouldn't have known that he had the brain bleed! He's right on track developmentally.  We still don't know the extent to which the bleed affected his brain but she said the chances of it being anything major are pretty small since he's doing so well!  PRAISE GOD!!!  We honestly can't thank all of you, our prayer warriors enough!  Aryanna is right on track developmentally as well.  Our children are living, breathing proof of God's miracles!  The nurse practitioner also weighed them and measured their length and head circumference.  They aren't on the growth curve yet, but they're closer to it than when they were born so they're doing a good job of catching up.  This didn't surprise us because they're such good eaters and gaining weight like crazy!  (Anthony was 8 lbs 11 oz and Aryanna was 6 lbs 15 oz).  We've also been having OT (Occupational Therapy) come to the apartment once a week and last week we had PT (Physical Therapy) from the AEA come.  So grateful we have so many resources available to us!  OT, PT and the follow-up clinic all have them working on similar things right now:  tummy time, pull-ups from their backs on the floor while holding our hands, and sitting with our assistance to work on their neck muscles, stretches looking left since they both love to look right and are getting flat spots to prove it, staying  mid-line with their hands at their face when they're on their backs to keep their shoulders rounded and pressure on the back of their head and grasping toys.

Upcoming Appointments
Anthony will be going to the cardiologist in September to check on his PDA, but the last time we were at the pediatrician she said she couldn't even hear his murmur!  Next week we're going to the pediatrician for their 3 month appointment.  Normally we wouldn't go back until 4 months, but she wants to keep an eye on them since they're preemies and we're grateful that's her attitude!  One of the things she'll be checking on is a condition Anthony has developed recently that's common with preemies called hydrocele.  I won't go into the details about his boy parts, but you can read about it here.  A lot of times it just resolves itself, but it can turn into a hernia which would require surgery.  Please pray that it would resolve on its own-God has been so faithful in healing our little guy so far and we're trusting that he will again!

So that's the update!  I don't think we've had a week yet where we haven't had some sort of doctor appointment on top of the weekly visits from the visiting nurse and OT.  But again, we're so grateful that we have so many resources available to us to make sure our little ones grow and develop.  And we know that these appointments will be fewer as they continue to make progress.

On another note, school started this week but I'm not going back until October 4th.  So glad I get 6 more weeks with my little munchkins!

Happy Due Date!

Happy Due Date Anthony and Aryanna!  For the last 11 weeks you've been doing lots of things outside of mommy's tummy that most babies are doing inside their mommy's tummy or that they don't have to do at all until their due date: eating, digesting your food, breathing, and growing.  Mommy and Daddy and lots of other people have been praying that God would continue to knit you together outside of the womb and He has done just that and continues to do so every day.  You are fearfully and wonderfully made!  We are so proud of you for being such fighters.  You amaze us daily and you are such miracles!  We love you both!

From this point forward Anthony and Aryanna will have 2 ages: their actual age and their adjusted age.  For example, tomorrow their actual age will be 11 weeks and 1 day and their adjusted age will be calculated from their due date, which tomorrow will be 1 day.  For the most part we'll use their adjusted age for their developmental milestones (when they should roll over, crawl, walk, talk, etc).

They had their hemoglobin levels checked last week and those had remained stable, so that will get checked again at their 3 month appointment.  Tomorrow they have their first appointment with the pulmonologist (lung doctor) so we'll see what he says about when/how we'll start weaning them off oxygen.  As always, thank you for all the prayers!  They've come so far already as proven in these then and now pictures!  God is SO Good!
